Biosafety Applications In Poultry Business

Biosafety is all the measures to prevent disease factors from entering and spreading to human and animal habitats.

The purpose of biosafety  is  to reduce the risk of transmission of disease factors to poultry farms. Every business owner or farm  manager is responsible for the preparation and implementation of a biosafety program  appropriate for the  characteristics of the business  and flock structure  to be able to protect his animals or business from various risks. A healthy, efficient and profitable production in poultry production farms is possible with healthy flock.

The main objective of biosafety applications is to minimize the risk of transmission of disease and spreading within the flock. This goal is achieved only by well-analyzed animal-disease-environment relationships. For this reason, There is a need of  taking  protective measures to prevent the occurrence of a disease  and transmission of it and  a biosafety program  that the business always implements. The first purpose in poultry production farms is to prevent the occurrence of a disease and transmission of it and to protect the flock  health.

The frequency of diseases increases and economic losses are experienced  in th event that  biosafety  measures are inadequate or not implemented. Biosafety measures must be taken to reduce the risk of transporting the disease factor to the business through people and animals or coop equipment and transportation vehicles. Many reasons like uncontrolled movements of business personnel, vehicles and coop equipments, contacts with other nearby businesses, taking the poultries carrying disease or having uncertain health status, wild birds and rodent, shaft louse and insects, use of infected feed and water, inadequate disinfection measures cause serious health problems by spreading and transmission of bacteria, virus, fungi and many microorganism like these into the coops. For these reasons, implementation of  biosafety programs and ensuring the continuity of programs is essential  in order to protect poultry from infectious diseases and provide a healthy flock.

Biosafety measures applicable in the business;

  • Entrances and exits in the business must be controlled by the business manager. Visitors occupied on other poultry farms within the last 24 hours should not be accepted, visitor records must be kept as the name, date and duration of the visit, clean clothing and boots should be provided for the visitors, and use of disinfectant hand and foot bath should be provided.
  • Vehicle traffic must be controlled. Access of different vehicles must be restricted and all vehicles entering the operation must be washed by installing disinfecting water spraying stations at the entry and exit points. Vehicles that carry dead the animals must be disinfected on their arrival and departure.
  • Employee visits to other businesses or places related to poultry should be restricted. Hands, hair, clothes and disease factors can be carried from one coop to another. All personnel working in business should stay away from people working with chickens or other poultry species. Materials used in business should not be shared. If they are shared, it must be absolutely disinfected before taken into the business back. Disinfectant foot bath must be cleaned daily and filled with freshly disinfected water. Disinfectant foot baths should be used while entering and exiting the coops.
  • Dead animals must be destroyed according to the environmental regulations, within the scope of  biosafety regulations.
    • The flocks having disease doubt or problem should be reported to the authorities by being detected.
  • There must be struggle against red shaft louse, insect and rodent in the coops. After the coop is cleared off, cleaned and disinfected, the wall, ceiling and cracked areas of the coop must be disinfected with the spray. There should be no material or waste mass in the environment that could be a nest for rodent, the grass around the building must be cleaned or cut.
  • The coop environment should be cleaned and disinfected at regular intervals. Coarse dirt and spider webs must be swept out. All surfaces should be solidly brushed with a cleaning agent.
  • Detergent and organic material should be solidly rinsed away. Disinfection should be done after the coop is heated and completely covered. Disinfestations should be applied for twice according to the situation; after the first application the surfaces should be completely dried and then the second application should be done.
  • A suitable disinfestations should be the one economical, having broad spectrum antimicrobial effect, having no adverse effect for human and animal health, unscented, quick , non-corrosive, easily soluble in water, pervasive  into cracks and holes  easily and having cleaner feature.
  • Before and after cleaning and disinfestations, the amount of bacteria should be measured.
  • Continuous training on biosafety should be organized for the employees
  • The Biosafety plan prepared in accordance with the specifications of the business should be hung on a place that the business owner and the staff can see at any time.
  • Health state of flocks should be observed continuously. Vaccination program of the flock should be determined  by ensuring the proper selection and the implementation of vaccine and vaccination programs.

As a result,
Biosafety applications; minimize the disease transmission and spreading of them. It  reduces the risk of transmission of diseases (such as salmonella) from animals to humans. It prevents the infection of bird flu and Newcastle disease seen rarely to the business. It keeps the flock healthy and prevents disease  factor from entering and spreading among the flock. It provides healthy animal and healthy food production.
